3 Healthy (and Delicious) Coffee Alternatives

I have a love/hate relationship with coffee. On the one hand, it tastes amazing and is serious motivation for getting me out of bed in the morning. On the other hand, it leaves me feeling dehydrated, a bit spacey, and overall not ideal.

I’ve looked for many coffee alternatives over the last few years, and I always roll my eyes when I see a magazine recommend “swapping your cup of coffee for green tea.” When it comes to coffee, I’m not really in it for the caffeine- I drink it because I love the flavor and comfort that it brings me.

So if you’re a fellow coffee lover/hater who knows that green tea just isn’t going to cut it, check out my three favorite coffee alternatives.

Crio Bru

If I had to choose, I’d say this is my top pick. Rather than ground coffee beans, Crio Bru is ground cocoa beans. You can brew it the same way you’d make coffee, and you get an amazing chocolatey flavor!! It contains next to no caffeine, but it will give you a nice energy boost thanks to a natural stimulate found in the cocoa beans called theobromine. I love the energy I get from this drink because it’s much smoother than the jittery buzz that caffeine gives me. And have I mentioned that it’s SO delicious?

Four Sigmatic

So how do you feel about replacing your morning coffee with mushrooms? Sounds weird right, but stick with me! Four Sigmatic has created a number of blends made with medicinal mushrooms, which are special types of mushrooms that contain above normal health benefits. You’ll get all of the benefits of these mushrooms, without any mushroomy taste. I was skeptical (and a bit nervous) before trying them, but I promise there’s not even a hint of a mushroom taste.

I tried their Mushroom Hot Cocoa, which blends mushrooms with cocoa and coconut sugar. It tasted just like hot chocolate. I also tried their Mushroom Coffees, which blends the mushrooms with instant coffee, so this is a great option for someone who isn’t interested in giving up coffee altogether but would like some added health benefits. Again, no mushroom flavor, but I’m not personally a fan of the taste of instant coffee, so I will be sticking with the Hot Cocoa. They also have Mushroom Elixers, which contain no cocoa or coffee. I haven’t tried them, but I’ve heard amazing things, and I think they might be next on my list.

Roasted Dandelion Root Tea

This is another one that initially might not sound very appealing but will seriously surprise you. I had heard of using this tea as a coffee substitute for a few years before trying it because I thought there was no way it would taste good. Surprise! It’s delicious! And really good for you. Part of what I love most about a cup of coffee is the richness and fullness of it, which is why tea doesn’t always cut it. Roasted dandelion root tea offers the richness I’m looking for along with a nice, almost nutty flavor. It is naturally caffeine free, so it might not suit it if you’re looking for that caffeine fix, but it has a host of health benefits including being a great digestive aid. I love this tea mixed with some soy milk, maple syrup, and a dash of cinnamon.

This is my go-to brand for dandelion tea! 

While I did say that teas don’t cut it for me as a coffee replacement (I love teas, they just aren’t what I want in the middle of a coffee craving), there are a few that offer a fuller flavor than most and that I do sometimes turn to.  Cream Earl Grey, in particular, is delicious!

If you do choose to stick with coffee, I highly recommend going organic. Coffee is heavily sprayed with pesticides, and I notice that I feel much better after having organic coffee versus non-organic.
