“Close your eyes and imagine you’re on a hillside villa in the rolling hills of Tuscany, which in case you didn’t know, it is the epicenter of delicious Italian cuisine. Now open your eyes, maybe you’re at Kroger and not Tuscany, but you can still find the delicious Taste of Italy® and bring it home with you”
We’ve all been there and done that, when we finally reach the point when the food we eat is as repetitive as the t-shirts our kids’s wear. No matter how many different recipes we see on social media, we end up making the same darn things over and over again. Well, it’s time for change!
I made my way to our local Kroger grocery store with one goal in mind — to find the necessary products to create a new dinner dish that my family would love. I started at the butcher, we eat lots of turkey, beef and obviously chicken, so I decided to grab something different this time. A pound of organic smoked pork sausage is exactly what we needed! Then I made my way to the Italian food aisle to locate the Taste of Italy® products, and that’s where I quickly put the rest of my new creation together.
Although we are big fettuccine fans, I found out that by using thinner and lighter pasta you can truly spruce up a Tuscan dish, plus if you’re planning on adding meat (as I am) it will also make it a bit lighter and easy on the tummy (and calories, but who’s counting anyway..). So I grabbed a couple of boxes of spaghetti pasta, and went on the quest for the perfect pairing Taste of Italy® sauce.
I believe that we are commonly victims of what I call “food ethnicity crisis”, where we think that all Mexican food has sour cream and tons of grated cheese, and that all Italian food has droopy, thick sauces with also tons of cheese on top, and that couldn’t be further from the truth. As someone that has had the pleasure of visiting Italy, I know better, and I want to make sure that so does my family.
I chose the Bertolli® Taste of Italy® Tomato and Basil sauce. Why you ask. Because once you get the right density on the spaghetti pasta (al dente), and you add a light, fresh and airy sauce to it, it is like Italian heaven in your mouth! Nothing complements pasta better than the taste of sweet tomato sauce with the tartiness and aroma of basil, so I knew that pairing this fresh combination with the rich taste of the pork sausage would be incredible.
After rushing home, I threw the pasta in water, cooked the sausage, brought up my Bertolli® Taste of Italy® Tomato and Basil sauce to a simmer (it brings out the flavor) and then mixed it with the pasta once drained. I sliced the the sausage in bite-sized pieces, and decided to top if off with just a hint of fresh parmigiano romano, as remember the cheese is only supposed to add a hint of flavor, not overpower it.
So next time your dinner menu is looking repetitive and boring, remember that a little creativity and Bertolli® Taste of Italy® can go a long way!
